Ilha Grande: A Trip to the Big Island

When I planned for a trip to Rio de Janeiro, the first thing that I wanted to do was go the island with paradise-like beauty, Ilha Grande. It is the most beautiful natural retreat that you will come across. It took me 2 hours to drive from Rio. The crystal clear water and the white sandy beaches are the primary attractions of the island. Here are a few things that you should do when you visit Ilha Grande.

Go Sunbathing or Surfing

Visit Lopes Mendes. This is a beach which the most scenic beauty. I was never going to miss out on this. The beach is long and is covered in white sand. One side of the beach you will find the crystal clear water and on the other side the tropical palm trees. In order to reach, you have to take a boat ride to Pouso and then go trekking through a forest. The beach doesn’t attract the crowd. You can relax and sunbathe on the white sand. The water is perfect for surfing.

Visit an Abandoned Prison

One of the darkest secrets of the city is Candido Mendes. This prison is highly secure and houses some of the most dangerous criminals. There are stories that say that Escadinha, a dangerous warlord had broken out and later he had been rescued by a helicopter. For years, it kept the prisoners away from this mainland. However, it closed down in 1994. A visit to this prison was a unique experience. I took the trail from Vila de Dois Rios.

Go for Diving

Do you love marine life? Then you should definitely take a dive in Ilha Grande. In the main tourist regions, you will equipment to go scuba diving. Along with the equipment, I also hired a guide for scuba diving since I am not that experienced. The most popular regions are Gruta do Acaia, Ilha das Palmas, and Ilha de Jorge Grego.
