Olhao is a coastal town in Portugal located in the Eastern Algarve Region. Fishing is one of the major occupations in this place owing to its proximity to the Ria Formosa lagoon. The town is flanked with beautiful beaches and there are 2 barrier islands that offer some perfect locations for honeymoon holidays. Even during summers, the beaches are not too crowded. We stayed in Olhao for over a week, but still couldn’t get enough of it. Some of the best sites in the town are mentioned here.
- Ria Formosa
Our trip to the Ria Formosa Natural Park was a thrilling experience. The 60 km parkland is situated on a lagoon in Algarve coastline. Two barrier islands separate the lagoon from the ocean. The natural park houses a beautiful bird sanctuary that serves as a natural habitat for hundreds of species of birds. Springtime brings in more birds that migrate from faraway places. We thoroughly enjoyed a guided cruise that took us around the entire lagoon. The place is one of the best conservatories in Portugal.
- Ilha Da Culatra
Ilha Da Culatra is one of the 2 barrier islands that can be reached by ferry. The place is lovely and not much crowded in the evening. So if you are looking for a tranquil beach destination, there is no better place in Olhao. The Oceanside beaches are clean with soft sand and gentle waves. The place has some nice restaurants and bars that make it easy for you to enjoy a day-long outing.
- Our Lady of the Rosary Church
The church is the landmark of Olhao town. Its construction lasted for around a century and was completed in 1783. The traditional church is decorated with paintings and stained glass windows. From the tower of this tall cathedral, you can enjoy a magnificent sight of the entire town. The entry fee for climbing the tower is € 1.00.
